Email spacing: make the message easier to scan

4 min read

Email spacing tells the reader which elements belong together. A heading, its explanation, and its button need a closer relationship than two separate product stories. When every gap is the same, even a short Shopify campaign can feel crowded or disconnected. Use a small, consistent spacing scale and check that the grouping still makes sense after the layout stacks on mobile.

Group by meaning

Keep a product name close to its image and price. Keep an explanation near the action it supports. Use larger spacing between separate sections than between related elements inside a section. This gives the reader a visual map before they read every word.

Build the pattern into a reusable Sendvio template. Choose a small set of spacing values and use them consistently instead of adjusting every block by eye. The template should still allow content to grow when a title wraps onto another line.

Use a small scale instead of unrelated gaps

Choose a few spacing steps and assign them jobs. As an illustrative starting point, a small gap can connect a product name to its price, a medium gap can separate the explanation from its action, and a larger gap can introduce a new section. The exact values should suit the template; consistency in the relationship matters more than a particular number.

For example, you might test 8, 16, and 32 pixels for those three levels, then adjust after viewing the sent email. Do not apply the largest gap between every paragraph. If everything is equally separated, related details stop looking connected and the email becomes unnecessarily long.

Line spacing has a different job. It separates lines inside a paragraph so the eye can follow them comfortably. Paragraph margins separate complete thoughts. Adding a large margin cannot repair cramped lines, and increasing line height cannot make two unrelated sections clearly distinct. Adjust the correct layer of spacing for the problem you see.

Avoid empty space with no job

Large gaps can make a short message feel disconnected, especially on a phone. Check whether a fixed-height block or an unnecessary spacer is pushing the action far below its explanation. Remove the structural cause rather than shrinking the text to fill an awkward shape.

Keep comfortable line spacing inside paragraphs and avoid overly wide text columns. A short paragraph is easier to follow when its lines remain connected without crowding. Preview long product names and language versions before declaring the spacing finished.

Diagnose the empty area before changing the type

If a large blank region appears beneath a short heading, inspect fixed heights, spacer blocks, and padding on both the heading and the following component. Two reasonable-looking settings can add together into an excessive gap. Remove the duplication rather than reducing the font until the space appears occupied.

When columns stack on mobile, check whether desktop alignment spacers remain between the newly vertical blocks. A spacer used to line up buttons across cards can become an unnecessary blank area under a short product description. Prefer components that grow with content and a stacking order that preserves each product as one unit.

Test the scan, then the reading

Look at the email for a few seconds and identify the main promise and action. If several blocks compete equally, simplify the hierarchy. Then read the full message to make sure the visual grouping matches the meaning.

Inspect the narrow layout after columns stack. A gap that looked appropriate between side-by-side cards may become excessive vertically. Good spacing should make the content feel intentional at both sizes, without relying on hard line breaks or a particular amount of copy.

Test the system with the shortest and longest realistic content. A short title should not leave a disconnected button, and a long title should not collide with the price. Include a translation, a missing optional line, and a product with no image. The spacing should support those variations without requiring a manual redesign for every campaign.

Finish with two passes: a quick scan to find the promise and action, then a full read to check the sequence. If the layout looks calm but the action is several screens away from the explanation it belongs to, the grouping still needs work. Good spacing is useful because it communicates relationships before the customer commits to reading every sentence.
