SMS opt-outs: test the choice from reply to next campaign

3 min read

An SMS opt-out is only complete when the customer's choice changes future sending. The instruction in the text must work with the destination and sending configuration, and the resulting status must survive later updates. Test the entire path with your supported setup, including the next campaign and any automation that might otherwise reach the same Shopify customer.

Check the supported process

Review the current requirements and behavior for the markets you send to. Do not assume one keyword or flow works identically everywhere. Make the instruction clear enough for the customer to understand without opening an unrelated page.

In Sendvio, verify the actual subscription and exclusion status after a controlled test. Keep marketing and transactional purposes appropriately distinguished rather than using one as a workaround for the other.

Follow the choice through the whole process

Use an authorized controlled number and send a representative message through the supported setup. Follow the opt-out instruction exactly as a customer would. Then inspect any expected confirmation, the resulting subscription state, and eligibility for a later marketing send.

Check the specific sender and destination configuration you use. The available keywords, reply behavior, or linked process can vary; wording copied from another setup may not work here. If a number cannot receive replies, do not instruct people to reply with a keyword unless that route is genuinely supported.

Include the final translated instruction in multilingual tests. A correctly translated sentence is not enough if it names a keyword or process the configuration does not recognize. Keep the instruction understandable and confirm the actual system response before using it at scale.

Preserve the decision through updates

Review imports, integrations, and manual changes that could overwrite an opt-out. A valid mobile number should remain excluded from marketing when the recipient has withdrawn permission. Technical reachability does not reverse that choice.

Document who can change the status and what evidence is required for a legitimate new subscription. Avoid resubscribing someone simply because they place another order or appear in a new customer export.

Test what happens after the customer leaves

Re-import or update a controlled record through the same approved process your team uses for audience maintenance. Verify that the marketing opt-out remains respected. A new order, a valid-number result, or a changed profile field should not silently overwrite the person's choice.

Inspect an automation with a waiting customer who opts out before a later marketing step. Confirm how the supported setup evaluates eligibility and handles queued work. Resolve uncertain behavior before relying on it; the existence of an opt-out field alone does not prove that every downstream route uses it correctly.

If a person later chooses to subscribe again, use the appropriate supported process and preserve the evidence needed under your requirements. Do not manually reverse the status merely because a campaign would benefit from a larger audience. Restrict status changes to people who understand the policy and the consequences.

Watch the trend behind opt-outs

Review opt-outs by campaign and acquisition source. A spike may point to unexpected frequency, unclear signup wording, or an irrelevant offer. Fix the cause rather than making the opt-out harder to use.

Repeat the functional check after meaningful configuration or market changes. Keep the process part of normal campaign readiness, alongside links and message length. A clear exit respects the customer's control and helps the remaining audience represent people who actually want the communication.

Record the test date, sender configuration, destination, and observed outcome so it can be repeated after a meaningful change. When opt-outs rise, compare the campaign promise, audience source, and combined message frequency. An easy exit should remain intact while you fix the reason people no longer want the messages.
