Shopify purchase recency: choose a relevant next message

3 min read

Shopify purchase recency measures how long it has been since a relevant purchase. It can help separate a recent buyer from someone who may be ready to return, but the useful interval depends on the product. Choose the event that fits the message, check customers at the boundary of the rule, and avoid treating one fixed number of days as a universal definition of interest.

Choose the relevant purchase event

Decide whether the segment uses any purchase or a purchase in a specific category. A customer may be recent overall but overdue for a particular refill. Check how cancelled or returned orders affect the field you use.

Build the condition in Sendvio with reliable data and inspect sample records. Keep subscription status separate. A recent purchase can make content relevant without establishing permission for a marketing channel.

Choose the clock that matches the message

A customer may have bought a gift yesterday and last bought their usual refill two months ago. Store-wide recency describes the new order, while category-specific recency describes a different need. Neither is inherently better; the correct clock depends on what the next message is trying to help the customer do.

For a general thank-you, the latest qualifying order may be appropriate. For a refill reminder, inspect the relevant product history and the customer's likely usage context. Do not let an unrelated purchase automatically prove that a refill message is needed or unnecessary without considering the purpose of the rule.

Define the date event too. Order creation, fulfillment, and delivery are not interchangeable. Use the available event that best supports the message and account for its limitations. If you only know when the order was placed, avoid language that claims to know exactly how long the customer has used the product.

Match the message to the interval

Recent buyers may benefit from care, setup, or product information. Customers approaching a normal repeat interval may appreciate a reorder reminder. Longer-lapsed buyers may need a fresh reason to consider the store again.

Avoid imposing a replenishment schedule on durable goods. Use actual purchase patterns and product knowledge to choose the starting interval, then treat it as a hypothesis you can revise.

Test the boundaries of the chosen interval

Suppose your initial hypothesis is that a relevant group may need a reminder around 60 days after purchase. Check customers just before, at, and after the configured boundary, as well as one who reorders during a delay. The number is illustrative; choose your actual interval from product knowledge and observed behavior.

Inspect how a fresh order changes campaign membership and later automation eligibility. A customer who just returned should not continue receiving a dormant-customer message that says they have been away. Verify the point at which the configured rule is evaluated rather than assuming every audience updates at the same moment.

Keep overlapping journeys visible. A recent buyer may already receive care information and a review request. Recency can help choose a useful next message, but it should also prevent unnecessary repetition when several teams are scheduling communication.

Review overlap and movement

A customer can move from a dormant group to a recent-buyer group after an order. Verify that campaign exclusions and automation conditions respond appropriately so the old message does not continue after the state changes.

Compare outcomes within similar recency groups over time. Do not assume a higher response from recent buyers proves the copy is better; they begin with a different relationship to the store. Recency is useful when it helps explain the next appropriate message, not when it becomes a permanent label or a shortcut for every targeting decision.

Review results across comparable recency groups and ask whether the message helped with the intended need. A high response among very recent buyers may reflect their existing interest rather than superior copy. Use the evidence to refine the interval and content together, keeping the rule understandable enough to revisit when the product or buying cycle changes.
